Sandy and grimy, the watches, cell phones, family photos, $100 bills, and passports from Pakistan, Syria and Sudan are the tattered possessions of migrants who died at sea. Italian homicide police removed the items from the corpses of about 90 men, women and infants who perished aboard three different boats this summer. They preserved the personal effects - a beaded necklace, religious items both Christian and Muslim, a wedding picture, an Istanbul bus pass - as potential evidence to use in court against their smugglers, and to identify the corpses. "We treat these cases as murder cases," said Giovanni Drago, a longtime member of Palermo's homicide squad, which gave Reuters permission to photograph the possessions. They offer a glimpse into the lives of a few of the 3,500 people who have died this year crossing the Mediterranean, desperate to reach Europe. Many of the corpses brought to Palermo had been removed from below the deck of a wooden fishing boat. Jammed together next to the motor, the migrants suffocated, autopsies revealed. Fare i conti con la morte è il destino ineluttabile di tutti noi e a Palermo sembra che questo dovere naturale sia ancora più potente che in altri posti al mondo. Tra la fine del 1500 e il 1800 centinaia di persone appartenenti prevalentemente a ceti sociali agiati furono seppellite, dopo avere subito speciali trattamenti di mummificazione, nelle catacombe dei frati Cappuccini di Palermo. Dal frate Silvestro da Gubbio, il primo ad esservi sepolto nel 1599, a Rosalia Lombardo la bambina morta di polmonite nel 1920 quando non aveva ancora compiuto 2 anni. Ancora oggi le Catacombe dei Cappuccini, nonostante l’attuale degrado in cui versano, rappresentano un luogo suggestivo, misterioso e affascinante dove il macabro si mischia alla memoria. Oltre ottomila scheletri e corpi mummificati ci consentono di osservare da vicino un pezzo importante del nostro passato e perchè no anche il nostro futuro rivelandoci la caducità della vita.

The gently twisted amulet wards off the evil eye and is a must-have accessory on Naples' chaotic, narrow streets. The alleys of the old town are full of shops selling horns of all sizes and for any pocket, sometimes becoming works of art in their own right. Ho cominciato a fotografare a Palermo, la mia città di nascita, e scattare per il news è stato quasi un percorso naturale, a quei tempi, e sto parlando dei primi anni '90, a Palermo non mancavano di certo le notizie di rilievo. "Appunti veloci di indirizzi ed orari, luoghi da raggiungere subito, fotografie rapide, sviluppi e fissaggi sommari, il quotidiano non può attendere. La giornata del giovane reporter è scandita da telefonate e spostamenti rapidi in moto, conferenze stampa, omicidi, commemorazioni, arresti. E' la palermo degli anni '90. Il fotografo di cronaca ha il dovere di riportare, ogni giorno, la notizia, di documentare il fatto, di guardare l'accaduto con gli occhi del lettore, di semplificare, egli deve trovarsi tra decine di altri colleghi fotografi nella posizione migliore e realizzare l'immagine giusta, efficace, quella che verrà scelta e pubblicata" Da Agenda, cose da fare. Like many young men in Italy, these amateur soccer players in the small Sicilian town of Mineo dream of stardom on the field. But for this group, having made it this far is already an achievement. ASD Mineo, as their squad is called, is made up of African migrants who risked their lives to cross the Mediterranean in hopes of finding asylum – a journey that has killed many others in shipwrecks. Their team, the first of its kind in Italy, was created and funded by the managers of the Mineo centre for asylum seekers, pictured above. It is one of Europe's largest such shelters, hosting some 4,000 migrants from 40 nations.
